No Blood for You!
Apr. 7th, 2022 01:34 pmI learned something at my regular blood drive today. I signed up at the last local blood drive 8 weeks ago to donate today. The drive is conveniently planned this way so you should be eligible to donate at the next blood drive.
Today, I guessed something was up when I didn't get the usual email from Red Cross suggesting I get the Rapid Pass (Basically a questionaire full of health questions.). When I arrived at the drive I learned my noon appointment had mysteriously disappeared. It seems that instead of donating a pint on a regular basis, I was actually donating more. I had not known that the vampires now have scales on the blood bags so they can measure the blood drawn and take more from bigger people. (Anyone who knows me, is aware I am no Munchkin.) Over several regular donations of more blood drawn per donation, it seems I had paid to much to the blood bank and was not yet eligible.
So I signed up for the next drive and left.
At least I still got cookies.

West Side Story
Dec. 29th, 2021 11:39 amI went to see the new version of West Side Story. Partly because it was hyped as being terrific and part because it was a box office bomb and would disappear soon. I could see why to both things. The technical aspects of the film were excellent, but there was no "magic". It took me a while to figure out what magic was missing. While musical numbers were methodically included, they lacked emotional impact. "Gee Officer Krupke" should have had me dying with laughter despite my better judgement. It didn't. There wasn't the execution of visual jokes to make the scene memorable. Similar in the "America" song. This was true throughout the movie in both dramatic and comedic parts.
Recent Adventures
Oct. 31st, 2019 08:34 pmI just got a happy post card from Canadian friend hissy papa, which I understand is happy fish spelled backwards. It marvelous ocean creatures and a lady in a Gym suit.
A light turnout for Halloween by my current standards. No more than 200 instead of the usual 400-800 I usually get.
I'm still launching rockets and doing my civic duty on the planning commission.
I have also learned that squirrels like to eat pawpaws.

Last Tuesday's adventures
Feb. 8th, 2019 05:26 pmSo, I donated a pint of blood last Tuesday. Afterwards I dropped in Kazoo Books, my local independent book store. Their copies of Jim Hines latest book had arrived. It looks good. They couldn't sell me a copy until next Tuesday's publication date, because that would be wrong. A copy has been set aside for me.
Last week I earned my 5 gallon blood donation pin (O+) AND the NARAM Contest Director Patch. I can't decide which I'm more proud of.
Anyway picture of patch with all 5 gallon pins attached:

NARAM as it is usually known as. I am going to be Contest Director (CD) next year. I have finished talking to the National Contest Chair and we have worked out a final list of ten contest events. It will run from July 29 to August 5 next year 2017. The hotel is in Grand Rapids, Michigan with the flying field just east of Muskegon, Michigan. Even if you don't fly rockets, you are welcome to come watch.
International model rocket stuff
Aug. 23rd, 2016 12:55 pmThe International model rocket contest (Internats) live coverage is starting now. Just in case you haven't had enough Olympics.

Rocket Recap
Aug. 4th, 2016 06:58 pmWell, my plastic model of a lunar lander survived its flight. In fact it had a most excellent flight and I moved up to second place. So my overall results at NARAM were two second places, in plastic model conversion and 1/2A-superroc altitude, and a first place in C-parachute duration multi-round. Combined they gave me a 3rd place overall in C division.

NARAM rocket contest
Jul. 29th, 2016 01:23 amYesterday I placed second in 1/2A superroc altitude. Today I took first place in C parachute duration multiround. 1/2A superroc is a skinny little 1 meter tall rocket that I managed to get 103 meters into the sky. In C parachute duration multiround I managed to get 36 inch diameter parachutes into 3/4 inch diameter tubes. I had two flights of over 5 minutes and 1 flight that was timed until 8 seconds short of 5 minutes.
Tomorrow is "Plastic Death". We will see if my plastic model survives.

National Rocket Contest
Jul. 23rd, 2016 11:21 pmI've made it safely to the 100 degree heat of Springfield, MO for NARAM. I've learned that I won't be giving a talk for my R&D project. Oh well, at least I get valuable flight points. Tomorrow I have to rebuild a model for E-Scale Altitude. Any good hobby is spiced with a certain amount of masochism.
Coffee Barista Herpatologist
Mar. 3rd, 2016 01:31 pmI was at the local coffee shop last week and the discussion turned to scary things. The barista admitted to being bothered by spiders with too many legs, but that snakes and lizards didn't bother her. It seems she has several pet lizards at home.
I mentioned that I had seen several lizards crawling about during my travels through Mali on the way to Timbuktu. I even had a photograph of one. I brought the picture in to the coffee shop yesterday and she identified it, with the help of a smart phone, as a Rainbow Agama or Agama agama to be scientific. Apparently it is a member of the iguana family of lizards.

The broken tail is likely the result of battles with other male lizards.

Local glass working shop in Kalamazoo
Sep. 28th, 2015 12:59 pmWe have been fortunate to have the West Michigan Glass Arts Center in my area. The center has fallen on hard times and is asking for help. I personally have donated a substantial sum to the cause. Here is the kickstarter:
